The social first hook opening

Most brands think the “polish” should show up in the first frame. I keep seeing the best-performing launches start somewhere completely different.

Manors Golf Apparel Golf does it at the top of their latest film. The whole opening looks like someone just pulled out their phone and hit record, handheld and slightly messy. And that’s exactly why it earns attention.

Here’s what’s happening underneath that choice. When a video opens with perfect lighting and polished framing, the brain tags it as an ad almost automatically. But when the opening feels native to the platform, like something anyone could’ve shot on their phone, people lean in. The whole thing feels discovered instead of delivered.

lululemon did something similar in their Lewis Hamilton campaign. They opened with what felt like a raw Zoom moment before the story pulled back into something cinematic and intentional. You come in curious, and by the time the production quality lifts, you’re already invested.

That’s the move. Start social-first to earn the attention, then go cinematic to deliver the story. The opening has one job… earning enough trust that people stay for what comes next.
